Former Wolves goalkeeper dies aged 74

Pierce helped Wolves to its first League Cup victory in 1974

Former Wolves goalkeeper Gary Pierce, who helped the club to its first League Cup victory, has died, the club has confirmed.

The footballer was best known for stepping in to replace Phil Parkes during the 1974 League Cup final, where Wolves beat Manchester City 2-1.

Pierce ed the club in 1973 and made 111 appearances for Wolverhampton side.

A spokesperson said a minute's applause will be held in Pierce's memory prior to the Wolves match against Brentford on Sunday.

Pierce, who was born in Bury, started his senior career with Huddersfield Town.

His spell at Wolves came to an end in 1979 when he ed Barnsley, before seeing out his Football League career at Blackpool in 1984.

"The thoughts of everyone at Wolves are with Gary's family and friends at this sad time," a spokesperson added.
