Man jailed after single-punch killing in pub

A father-of-two who killed a man with a single punch in a pub has been jailed for three years and six months.

Usman Hanif hit 54-year-old John Barry in the face at the Red Lion in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, in July, after being told Mr Barry had sexually assaulted two women.

The 29-year-old, of High Street, Langley, Slough, was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court after being found guilty of manslaughter.

Judge Jonathan Cooper described the circumstances of the case as "wholly exceptional".

A woman had complained that she and another woman were "touched" by Mr Barry as he made his way past them, the trial was told.

Mr Barry had then begun to walk back towards the women.

Hanif, who was involved in a car repair business, had initially pushed Mr Barry then punched him in the face. Mr Barry died from his injuries three days later.

"I sentence you on the basis that this blow was wholly unnecessary - and you knew it," Judge Cooper told Hanif.

"You were at the very least reckless."

He added: "This was revenge and not defence."

The judge said police had looked at CCTV evidence and it was "quite clear" that Mr Barry had touched the women inappropriately.

He said the women believed they had been the victim of a sex assault.

Judge Cooper said the behaviour of both men had been out of character.

He said Hanif was a "good partner and father" and had a "great deal to offer" in the future.

Barrister John King, who represented Hanif, told the judge his client was a "man of good character".

Mr King added: "He is clearly very remorseful."

He said Hanif was willing to make a contribution to the cost of Mr Barry's funeral.

The judge said Hanif should pay £3,400.
