England Under-21s manager Lee Carsley named a 29-man squad today in preparation for Euro 2025.
That 29-man squad will have to be cut to 2023 before the first group stage game on 12 June, while there is also scope for him to make additions due to injuries before the squad is finalised.
Here are the main talking points:

According to the website Football Transfers' 'Estimated Transfer Value' algorithm, the current Under-21 squad is valued at £516.9m, almost double that of the group who won Euro 2023 (£280m at the start of that tournament).
Champions League, Premier League and full international appearances, along with current contract status at club level, all contribute to the ETV rating that Football Transfers give to a player - and it is different to the market value players may be sold and bought for.
The worth of the current team is boosted by many playing prominent roles at big clubs in the Premier League and across Europe.
For example, the top three players with the highest values: Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens (£59.7m), Manchester City's Rico Lewis (£53.6m) and Liverpool's Harvey Elliott (£40.2m).
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, 21, bucks that trend slightly, coming in as the fourth-most expensive player at £40.1m - but being part of the senior squad at Euro 2024 has significantly helped his value.
Another big hitter, Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri, is valued slightly lower at £28.2m because of his limited appearances and shorter contract status - but has a value that is expected to grow rapidly.
It's worth noting that, the overall value of the Euro 2023 team has risen hugely, going from £280m in 2023 to £626m in 2025.
Should this current 2025 squad see such a percentage increase, we will be looking at a set of young England players with a combined value of well over £1bn.

Thomas Tuchel was asked by BBC Radio 5 live if there is any concern over Phil Foden beyond his injury after a difficult season in general.
“Maybe we have got so used to his highest level that we are now, like you said, we are worried, but I think there is no reason to be worried," Tuchel said.
"I think it’s maybe just a dip in his development. Lately he needs to re-find the joy in his game. It’s not so easy, it is not falling easily into his feet. So yes, he is struggling, but he is still so young and still full of talent.
"I had a good phone call with him and everything is fine. I loved him as a person in camp. We don't need to talk about his talent, we will do more or less everything to bring him back to form. Hopefully, the main part is still on him, and he will come back.”

England boss Thomas Tuchel spoke to BBC Radio 5 live a little earlier and explained more on Phil Foden's absence from the squad.
“Phil is a little bit injured," he said. "He is complaining about an ankle problem, which he can’t get rid of since the Manchester derby.
"He hasn’t had a good spell at the club since last camp, he struggled to get minutes, he struggled to be decisive. And given the circumstances with his ankle problems we both decided, Phil and I, decided it may be better to give him a bit of time off, let him breathe, clear his head, get rid of his ankle problems, and then be more refreshed at the Club World Cup, which I will also monitor and be close to.
"It hurts a lot because I love Phil as a person in camp, he was fantastic. I love him as a player. The talent is outstanding, but at the moment this is the decision."

It's important to note it is a provisional, training squad, for the England Under-21s and Lee Carsley will need to cut six from the group ahead of Euro 2025.
There is no Kobbie Mainoo - just under a year after the Manchester United midfielder started the senior's Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain - and Manchester City's James McAtee is also absent.
Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens is also not included while it is a blow to lose Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, who has a hamstring injury.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Charlie Cresswell and Harvey Elliott won the tournament under Carsley two years ago and the Young Lions will rely on their experience.
Goalkeeper Owen Goodman, on loan at Wimbledon from Crystal Palace, is included for the first time.
There is scope for Carsley to made additions to the group, especially if there are injuries, before the squad is finalised next month.
Everton head coach David Moyes has confirmed that Jarrad Branthwaite will miss their final game of the season away to Newcastle on Sunday.
It also means that the defender was not available for a call-up to the under-21s England squad.
"I can tell you that he's injured and he won't be available. It's an injury, probably four or five weeks, his hamstring," Moyes said.
"So, there's not much we can do about it, it's a big loss to us but we have to live with it."

England won the European Under-21 Championship for the first time in nearly 40 years in 2023 after a dramatic last-minute penalty save by James Trafford ensured the Young Lions held on to beat Spain.
Trafford kept out Abel Ruiz's low spot-kick in the 99th minute after a lengthy VAR check.
The 20-year-old then produced another brilliant stop on the follow-up before being mobbed by his team-mates.
The winning goal came with virtually the last kick of the first half when a Cole Palmer free-kick deflected off team-mate Curtis Jones and wrong-footed goalkeeper Arnau Tenas to find the bottom corner.
Spain, who had scored 13 goals in the tournament, had a Ruiz goal ruled out for offside after half-time, before Trafford's late heroics sealed England's victory.
The win meant Lee Carsley's talented side became the third England team to win the competition after previously picking up the trophy in 1982 and 1984.
They are also the first team to record six successive clean sheets in the tournament's history.
Lee Carlsey has initially announced a 29-man training squad, which will be cut to 23 players on 6 June.

West Ham boss Graham Potter has just held his news conference and gave his view on Jarrod Bowen's omission from the England squad.
"Well, it's not my thing to pick that squad. I have full respect for the England manager," he said.
"Disappointed for Jarrod, but we will him, and he’ll carry on doing what he’s doing for us.
"He will be naturally disappointed. Of course, every player wants to play for their country.
"He has trained well for us, and he will be looking forward to the game [on Sunday]."

The England Under-21 side of 2023 was a special one – but manager Lee Carsley has challenged his new-look 2025 side to be even better.
"It's difficult to compare [2023 and 2025] at the minute," Carsley told BBC Sport reporter Alex Howell back in March.
"We are looking at the last squad knowing what they did. To win six games and not concede any goals [in the entire tournament], I think that will be very hard to recreate. But it's a goal and it's a target.
"That's the challenge we have put down for these players – we want them to be better than the last group, so hopefully they can be."
Only four players from the Euro 2023 winners' group were in the squad selected by Carsley in March: Jarrad Branthwaite, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Charlie Cresswell and Harvey Elliott.

World Cup qualifiers, International friendlies and a 4-week Club World Cup all at the end of a elongated season. I love football, but it's simply too much. The calendar is saturated - players suffer and as such, the quality of football suffers too. Is anyone seriously looking forward to England Vs Senegal and Man City Vs Wydad SC etc.

A reminder that earlier today, England senior men's head coach Thomas Tuchel spoke in-depth about the importance of players like Adam Wharton being involved in the Under-21 squad for this summer's tournament.
He said: "Together [Wharton] along with Tino Livramento, Jarell Quansah, Elliott Anderson and Liam Delap - all names who could play a role for us but a major tournament comes up for the Under-21s and the intention is they play a big part in this tournament.
"I like it a lot that they have chances to be leaders in this group, to be players we hopefully will rely on. We will monitor them closely but we decided that with these players they take the responsibility for the Under-21s."

Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher finds himself back in the England squad after a very good season with the Spanish giants. Gallagher's last appearance for Three Lions came in November last year and he wasn't part of Thomas Tuchel's first squad in March.
Whilst he isn't always the first name on Diego Simeone's team sheets, Gallagher has undoubtedly been instrumental in games for Madrid as he fits a unique profile in of a midfielder. Here are some of the stats detailing this claim -

Jarrod Bowen's omission from the latest England squad has garnered a lot of scrutiny and even more so after the selection of Noni Madueke instead.
Whilst Bowen is sometimes played up top, most of his action zones are on the right flank, very similar to Madueke.
So, let's have a look at the numbers per 90 minutes and what they say about the duo.

Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly has been picked ahead of Newcastle United's Tino Livramento by Thomas Tuchel for England's senior squad.
Whilst both players have been integral to the defensive structure of their respective clubs, the underlying numbers might disagree with this selection from Tuchel as Livramento edges Lewis-Skelly in numerous categories. Let's have a look at some of them.

Extremely sensible of Tuchel to let those eligible for the u21s help the u21s given the Euros this summer. Also he is right to keep looking at new players e.g. Toney and Chalobah. The proof will be in the eating. We need to stop throwing our toys out the pram when he doesn't select our favourite player in any one particular squad.
