It has been quite the year for Lola Young, who is up next on the Main Stage.

The pop singer-songwriter had several years of almost making it to the top.

In 2021, she sang on the John Lewis advert, was on the BBC Sound of 2022 list and had stellar reviews for her two albums.

But her hit Messy has catapulted her to the big time, reaching the top of the UK charts.

The 24-year-old also became the youngest British artist to have a Number One since Dave in 2022, and the youngest British woman to score a chart-topper since Dua Lipa in 2017.

And there has been award recognition too, with a nomination for best pop act at the Brit Awards and winning the rising star prize at the Ivor Novello Awards.

Young brings a raw and powerful voice, with emotional, direct lyrics and a bold and unapologetic presence on stage.

Last year, it was Sabrina Carpenter who drew a huge early afternoon crowd at Big Weekend.

Here in Liverpool, it’s another North American pop star riding the crest of a wave.

At just 21, Tate McRae has undeniable star power - and the singles to go with it.

The Canadian's currently in the middle of a big European tour - which will return to the UK next month - and described it as “fun” to stop at a “little festival,” a reflection of the size of the events she’s now used to playing.

She also said it was “cold,” but the crowd here feel well and truly warmed-up after that.

As with Sabrina Carpenter last year, some might raise questions about miming, but the many fans here wearing the signature Tate McRae sport jerseys will have been singing along too loudly to notice, or care!

The backing track for Tate McRae is at times really strong - which can sometimes lead to criticism of artists for not always singing live.

When McRae does sing, the vocals are incredibly clear, distinctive and powerful.

And she shows off her range with her hit You Broke Me First - which has had the crowd singing along.

She gives a special treat “for the Day ones” by dropping her 2022 hit, She’s All I Wanna Be, which really gets the crowd going - many of whom who appear to relate to the lyric: “Stupid boy making me so sad…”

That part gets sung particularly loud!

    Tate McRae says so anyway.

“She’s just one of the girlies,” Kate tells me. “She’s got some boss dance tunes and can’t wait to have a little dance to her.”

Kate tells me she's “a bit of a fraud” because she has borrowed it from her brother Daniel who says: “Me and my boyfriend went at the O2 Arena on Tuesday, so we bought matching tops.”

“Great tunes, great dancer, gorgeous, stunning, I love her,” she adds.

Kate is a Liverpool fan - she’ll be at their Premier League parade tomorrow but would “rather be with Tate than Liverpool today.”

It’s fitting then the Canadian pop singer-songwriter is playing here on the Main Stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

She has had six UK top 10 singles, with her first UK hit You Broke Me First during lockdown in 2020.

Since then, we’ve had energetic singles but also a slight hip-hop edge – with McRae’s dance beats being a highlight of her performances.
